Ami lecteur, lectrice mon amour,

The idea of an English version of du9 is not a recent one — indeed, back in the days around 1999, we already had a couple of interviews and reviews available for our French-impaired readers. But when (like the phenix) the site was relaunched in September 2005, we had other priorities to attend to, and the English part was left aside for later use.

Well, later use is now. Of course, we are not planning to translate everything on du9 — with now more than 800 (longish) articles, it would be a daunting task. But we will try and add new translations on a regular basis, focusing on little-reviewed authors or titles that we think would interest an English-speaking audience. Suggestions and wishes are welcome, but might take time before they are answered.

So reader my friend, reader my love, welcome to “du9 in English”, and let’s hope that this trip will be full of discoveries and eye-opening moments. Good readdance,

Translated by Xavier Guilbert in July 2010
Reader my friend, reader my Love, Here comes the time of our now yearly installment, as du9 takes on the opportunity of the looming Angoulême Festival to try and paint the portrait of the little world of bande dessinée. (Of course, the English version somehow lacks this superb timing, but we still hope it will be of interest to our readers not versed in the intricacies of the French language) As usual, we are driven by curiosity and precision, with the aim of providing a clear and (...)
Takahama Kan
Interview by Nicolas Verstappen in June 2010
Translated by Xavier Guilbert in June 2010
After having published her first stories in the Kinderbook collection and having collaborated with Frédéric Boilet on Mariko Parade, the talentuous Takahama Kan seems to have reached her full maturity in L’eau amére, in which she unveils the complexity of human relationships through difficult but also oddly endearing break-ups. With 2 Expressos, she follows up with her first longer story, published for the first time in Casterman’s Ecritures collection. Nicolas Verstappen: You (...)
Threat Assessment
Column by Xavier Guilbert in June 2010
Translated by Xavier Guilbert in June 2010
All unite! Early June, the 36 publishers of the Japan’s Digital Comic Association [1] and a few US publishers [2] announced a coalition to fight the “rampant and growing problem of scanlations”. And it was about time: as Brigid Alverson concluded briefly, “The rise of scan sites like Onemanga and Mangafox has coincided with a dip in manga sales, and no one thinks that’s a coincidence.”. No coincidence either in the timing of the publishers’ (...)

Splendor No More
12 juillet 2010
